Vision Processing

From Flattened Pixels to Reconstructed Cells

When a document is scanned, the resulting PDF is simply a container holding an unsearchable raster picture. Traditional OCR can locate letters, but it frequently fails on structured accounting ledgers because pixel noise, paper fold lines, and skewed baselines confuse standard recognition tools.

GridExtract leverages deep neural vision transformers. Our system detects the global perspective of the page, corrects rotational distortion, identifies gridline intersections, and extracts characters directly into structured array cells. The result is an audit-ready dataset that matches the original physical page.

Scanned PDF to Excel FAQs

How does GridExtract handle skewed, tilted, or low-resolution scans?
Our vision preprocessing pipeline performs automatic deskewing, contrast normalization, and speckle reduction before optical character recognition. Tilted document scans up to 45 degrees are straightened to ensure horizontal text lines remain aligned with spreadsheet rows.
Can the OCR recognize faint or photocopied dot-matrix printouts?
Yes. Our deep learning vision models are trained on legacy business archives, dot-matrix invoices, carbon copy paper, and high-contrast photocopies to accurately extract alphanumeric strings and figures.
What is the difference between converting vector PDFs and scanned PDFs?
Vector PDFs contain embedded machine-readable text and process near-instantaneously on our CPU fast-track. Scanned PDFs are essentially images of paper and require GPU-accelerated deep learning vision models to recognize glyphs, coordinates, and cell boundaries.
Are watermarks or background stamps removed during table conversion?
Our layout segmentation isolates the semantic foreground text and gridlines, effectively filtering out faint background stamps (such as 'PAID', 'CONFIDENTIAL', or company logos) that would otherwise contaminate cell numbers.
What resolution (DPI) is recommended for scanning paper documents?
We recommend scanning at 300 DPI in grayscale or color for optimal character clarity. However, GridExtract will successfully extract tables from scans ranging between 150 DPI and 600 DPI.
Does GridExtract retain archival copies of scanned documents?
No. In accordance with our security policies, scanned documents are processed in volatile RAM containers and completely erased once the extraction is finalized.
